Today, Sunday's Roland Garros 2012 finalists will be revealed. First up on Court Philippe Chatrier is the World number 2 and six time French Open Champion Rafael Nadal, up against fellow Spaniard and World number 6, David Ferrer.
Nadal entered Roland Garros in formidable form after a very successful 2012 clay court season, having won titles at Monte Carlo, Barcelona and Rome- his only loss coming in the third round of the Mutua Madrid Open to fellow compatriot Fernando Verdasco. His run at Roland Garros has been faultless, having not lost a set on his way to the semi-finals, and winning 60 out of his 61 service games.
That's not to say that one should completely rule out Ferrer's chances today. Not only has he surpassed everyone's expectations at Roland Garros 2012 with this semi final appearance and his win against world number 4 Andy Murray, but the pressure is most definitely not on him for the win. This small fact should allow him to loosen up once the initial points are out of the way, and therefore play a much more free match. Furthermore, this improves his chances of an epic upset.
Despite his tremendous run at RG 2012, I don't expect a win from Ferrer. However, nor do I expect an easy match for Nadal. Surely, this match up will challenge Nadal more than he has been in the tournament so far, with a huge possibility of Rafa losing his first set of the Grand Slam so far.
Following the all-Spanish clash, is World Number 1 against 16 time Grand Slam winner and former world number 1 Roger Federer. Neither of these men have had the easiest road to the semi-finals, with Federer having only 1 straight set win in the first round, and Djokovic with 3 straight set victories. More notably, both players fought through 5 set battles in their quarter-final matches, and both being 2 sets to 1 down at a point in their matches.
Inevitably, this match-up is much harder to call than the first semi-final, and I fully expect a 4 or even 5 set, grueling match which the world number 1 will have the slight edge and come out victorious.
